Life Coaching - How It Works

This is a subject most companies and individuals struggle to define, measure or even impact. Why is it hard? Because, while the definition might be clear - i.e. an appropriate balance between work and life, the interpretation can vary significantly.

Take some time and think about how the income, time freedom and service to others would change your life. Write a list of how the three benefits I just mentioned would change life for you. Next incorporate some of your own goals for 6 months, one year and three years down the road. Look for how your efforts could build the work life balance that would meet those goals and a clear mission statement will emerge.



Exercise is one of the greatest stress relievers you can find. And, it's free! Take some time between patients to go for a quick walk or jog. Do some sit-ups in your office. Or, yoga is a great way of relieving the tension that can build up over the course of a stressful day.

The first is the activity you take on that you shouldn't, similar to orange juice in a cookie recipe. It's an activity that isn't necessary, it's not enriching, or beneficial to your mix and a lot of times ruins the whole recipe. You need to say no to these activities.

Explore your options with your employer. Perhaps the option for flex hours is available to you. Being able to control here the work hours can make you more available to participate in non-work related activities in your life. Another option may be a compressed work week. You could work four 10 hour days instead of five 8 hour days. That will give you one more day off per week to fit in social activities or downtime to help restore balance and de-stress.



As women, we are desperate for someone we can relate to--to show us how work-life balance can be achieved in a way we want to emulate. Critics may attack the messenger, but it is the system that's broken. The existing structures for getting recognized on the outside and feeling successful on the inside; for being able to be fully present at home AND at work is in ruins. It appears to be an ALL or NONE paradigm that doesn't have balance front and center at all.

What would be considered a job well done? How would this be measured and/or know if you are meeting these goals successfully? Can you attach a number to it? Do you believe you are capable of achieving this?

Maintaining work/life balance is possible. You simply have to make some small adjustments to your everyday behaviors and outlook. Review these 5 tips and share them with your colleagues and family members to help each other become more in control of life!
